When you start a business or lead a team, you are bound to face setbacks and challenges. The most common problems include financial difficulties, lack of resources, or employee turnover.

In addition, there are so-called unexpected obstacles. These not only arise within the company environment but can also come “from outside”. For example from the private environment.

I still remember the effects of my direct experience with the tsunami in 2004. Even 20 years later, I have not forgotten my experiences there.

However, the first few months after returning were not easy either. Some days, I sat at my desk paralyzed, and countless images ran through my head. You can probably imagine the impact this can have on everyday business.

Aspiring entrepreneurs and young leaders need to possess a variety of qualities to succeed in difficult situations.

Four qualities that I have learned to value

1. Resilience

When you are starting a business or managing a team, setbacks and challenges are part of business. Resilience means being able to bounce back from these setbacks and keep moving forward. It also means that you can maintain a positive attitude and mindset even when things get difficult.

2. Adaptability

In today’s fast-paced business world, things can change quickly, and you need to be able to adapt to new situations at any time. That means being willing to learn new skills, being open to new ideas, and being able to pivot your business strategy when necessary.

3. Leadership

Whether you are leading a team of employees or building a business from scratch, you need to be able to inspire and motivate others. That means being a good communicator, setting clear goals and expectations, and leading by example.

4. Work ethic

Building a business or managing a team requires hard work, dedication, and persistence. You need to be willing to put in the time and effort needed to achieve your goals, even when it is not easy.

Final thought

There are certainly a few other qualities. The four mentioned have become relevant cornerstones for me in recent years.

With these qualities, aspiring entrepreneurs and young leaders can navigate difficult situations and emerge stronger on the other side.

Stay strong!
